It Was Only Separation

When the water parts away

from the shore, pulling back

suddenly, it seems so

irrevocable as if it could

never come back.

Or when the child leaps

from the swing and lands

on the grass as if that

green is a new kind

of home.

And when the door closes

inward on rooms

where the lights stay off

as if there never was a point

in seeing everything.
